Glazed Muse: Jessica Udeh

Could you introduce yourself and share what initially inspired your journey in the creative space?
I’m Jessica Udeh, also known as Jessicunt, and I’m a swiss army knife honestly. If I’m not DJ’ing, I’m collaging, if I’m not doing that I’m producing a campaign for a friend, or helping book artists for events all over the world. I’m a dot connector, it feeds me to ideate, create, and connect. This path was purely inspired by a lack of the things I wanted to see.
How do you believe your work stands out, and which creators have influenced your style or approach?
By being precise, I don’t waste time, sugarcoat, or pacify. What you see/hear is exactly what I feel. The artists who inspire me operate in a similar way—my friend and longtime collaborator Soleil, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, M.I.A, Kesh, Venus X, and Kelis.
What is a significant challenge you've faced in your process and how have you grown from it?
I used to have a fear of sharing or being recognized for certain skills. The thought of having to be unwaveringly consistent due to perception was paralyzing to me. Especially with being neurodivergent and having so many people I looked up to tell me over the years that I needed to stick to one thing.. I’m just glad I stopped listening to them. I’m a fluid and mercurial human being, and I don’t need to “aspire” every day. Some days, I’m just here, some days I’m doing a whole bunch of random things, and some days there’s a linear and concise path of creation. All of it counts.
How do you engage in collaboration and stay innovative in your endeavors?
I try not to engage with other artists on the basis of relatability. I like to connect with people off of their essence, if we mesh, we mesh, if we don’t, we don’t. I enjoy working with individuals, truly sovereign beings. Connecting with people from different socio-ethnic backgrounds or religious creeds helps keep me aware, open, and objective. That constant state of connection and exploration contributes to how I’m able to come up with new ideas or flip old ones.
What advice would you give the young visionaries looking to establish themselves in the industry?
Decide who you are first, principle wise, if people are allowed to tell you who you are before you can lock in on a self-concept, they can steer your perception of yourself and ultimately your destiny. Once you decide who you are, commit to that. Feel free to change, harden, soften, loosen as much as you see fit, but only as YOU see fit. You’re allowed to change your mind.
Where do you see yourself heading in the next few years?
I honestly can’t say at the moment. I just hope I’m somewhere making art, making money, in love, and off the mfn internet.

Not only is Lula Mae where we’re hosting The Glazed Room tomorrow, it’s also a contemporary Cambodian restaurant in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, featuring a sexy wine bar ambiance and a menu of standout small plates crafted by chef Dan San. Initially envisioned as a Southern bar food cocktail lounge, the current Myrtle Avenue location led to a menu inspired by San's Cambodian heritage and his grandmother's cooking, with highlights like hamachi crudo with lemongrass salsa, Sichuan chili vinegar fried tofu, and bone marrow with Cambodian fried bread. So come have dinner tomorrow and we’ll dance it off after⊹ ࣪ ˖
