Glazed Muse: Herrana Addisu
This month, we’re excited to spotlight our dear friend and veteran Glazed Muse, Herrana Addisu. An NYC-based filmmaker, multidisciplinary artist and Founder of Chucha Studios, Herrana has always been dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices and addressing social disparities through her powerful storytelling. We first came together in 2021 and had Herrana star in our Glazed Scarf campaign, which paid homage to the iconic Eritrean actress Zeudi Araya, and it was truly inspiring to see how she immersed herself in the story and vision. Herrana’s journey in the creative space is a testament to resilience, and we can’t wait to share her unique perspective and passion for social impact with you ~ Check out our chat below ⊹ ࣪ ˖

What initially inspired your journey in the creative space?
My journey into the creative space began as a way to amplify underrepresented voices and highlight social disparities through visual storytelling.
How do you believe your work stands out, and which creators have influenced your style or approach?
I believe my work stands out because it connects visual storytelling with larger systemic issues. I draw inspiration from my cultural background and personal experiences, which gives my films a unique blend of authenticity and depth. As for influence, I admire creators like Ava DuVernay and Haile Gerima, whose work not only tells compelling stories but also advocates for social justice. Their approach to storytelling has shaped my own pursuit of narrative-driven, impactful films.
What is a significant challenge you've faced in your process and how have you grown from it?
One of the significant challenges I’ve faced is navigating the complexities of producing work that intersects art with activism. While passion drives me, the challenge lies in securing resources and platforms that support socially impactful films. I've grown by building a strong network of collaborators who share my vision and values, which has allowed me to maintain the integrity of my work while expanding its reach. The journey has taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to my creative mission.
How do you engage in collaboration and stay innovative in your endeavors?
Collaboration is at the core of my work. Through Chucha Studios, I’ve created a space that encourages diverse voices to come together and share ideas. I seek out collaborators who not only bring technical skills but also share a passion for storytelling with a social impact focus. To stay innovative, I remain open to new perspectives, often looking beyond the traditional film industry for inspiration. Engaging with communities, listening to their stories, and aligning them with global conversations on sustainability and equity keeps my work fresh and relevant.
What advice would you give the young visionaries looking to establish themselves in the industry?
My advice would be to stay grounded in your "why"—understand the reason you're creating and let that guide your choices. Also, don't be afraid to seek mentorship and build a network that supports your vision. Take risks, and don’t wait for permission to create. In this industry, especially when you’re working with a purpose, it’s crucial to believe in your vision and persist, even when the road is challenging.
Where do you see yourself heading in the next few years?
In the coming years, I see myself continuing to create films that drive conversations around global issues, particularly through a lens of Ethiopian culture and women’s experiences. I hope to expand Chucha Studios into a platform that not only produces films but also supports other creatives committed to social impact. Additionally, I aim to deepen my involvement in programs that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that my creative projects contribute to systemic change on a global scale.

September Glazed Gems: Fashion Month Moments

Ferragamo's Spring Summer 2025 collection in Milan was an enchanting tribute to the world of dance, blending an array of yummy textures from buttery hand-woven leathers to whimsical fringes. Maximilian Davis truly pushed boundaries, presenting a captivating '80s off-duty ballerina aesthetic that gave us life. Drawing inspiration from legends like Katharine Dunham and Rudolf Nureyev, the collection featured waist-snatched trench coats, structured field jackets, and billowing parachute dresses. Playful knots and drapes, along with leather and denim pieces adorned with bold tufted details, created a stunning fusion of elegance and contemporary flair. It left us feeling inspired…and ready to sign up for a dance class. Who’s in?

Rave Review’s Spring Summer 2025 collection felt like a fresh perspective on sustainability, something we’re obviously passionate about—repurposing what already exists and reducing waste in meaningful ways. Their use of everyday materials like Scandinavian ginghams and dishcloths, reimagined into fun skirts and tops, speaks to the power of intentional design and storytelling. Even the customized thrifted Puma sneakers were a nod to creativity without compromise. It’s inspiring to see a brand deeply committed to sustainability while still pushing boundaries in fashion. Their approach aligns with our ethos, showing how we can honor the past while creating something entirely new and impactful.

Vaquera’s Spring Summer 2025 collection is a total love letter to the NYC fashion girlies who’ve been tapped in since the start. As they approach their 10th anniversary, Vaquera is still channeling that punk edge but with a more wearable and sustainable approach. They nailed it this season with their “new basics”—like the black bubble miniskirt with bike shorts, bullet-bra tops, and graphic tees—that give everyday rebel. Remixing classic silhouettes obviously resonates with us, but Vaquera has also built real credibility by pushing boundaries in fresh ways, proving that fashion can be bold, fun, and deeply personal all at once.
